Poaching?

Why the need to co-opt members?

AN ESSAY on Hugh Jackman's Broadway show by the world's most powerful theatre critic is laced with insinuations about the Australian star's sexuality, saying that he comports himself on stage like "a flaming queen".

and

But he isn’t gay, and is bemused — as is his wife Becky, an English teacher — by the fact he has such a strong gay following on Twitter.

‘Camp? I don’t think I am,’ he says, before adding: ‘Well, maybe a little. Whatever, I get messages which suggest people think they are going to be able to “turn” me, which I find bizarre.

‘I love women. I have always loved women. The irony was that being in the choir when I was a teenager was a surefire way of meeting them.’

UPDATE: Kevin Rudd's Labor supporting sister takes a principled stand in opposing same-sex marriage and is cruelly pilloried for it in comments on this story and the Brisbane Times link on Facebook.

School For Scandal

Just as the ancient Greeks eagerly awaited the latest scroll "νέος ιδέα" to hit the papyrus stands to find out what their favourite god or godess was up to, we too appear to fascinated by 21st century demigods from Mount Hollywood.

Hitting the headlines today:

A LOS ANGELES judge has ordered a screaming and crying Paris Hilton back to jail to finish a sentence for probation violation, overturning a decision by the LA Sheriff's Department to have the celebrity heiress serve the sentence at home for medical reasons.
And

BRITISH pop star George Michael has been banned from driving for two years and sentenced to 100 hours' community service after pleading guilty to driving while unfit through drugs.
The cult of celebrity has been often bandied about as a superficial explanation of our fascination with these quite obviously psychologically maladjusted people, but that hides a more serious issue.

Looking to celebrities for style and fashion tips is one thing, but asking them to comment on anything else just makes them and the interviewing journalist look silly.

While all of the above may seem terribly amusing - unless someone is killed, of course - there is a disturbing side effect of celebrity emulation.

It could be argued that the rise in eating disorders and binge drinking amongst young girls is a result of using celebrities as role models.

And while we're on the subject, can anyone name ten hot Hollywood names who can hold together a stable relationship? As an example, Kylie Minogue, who seems a nice enough person is nearing 40 and has never had a stable, long-term relationship. That's sad really.

While celebrities give us something to talk about, there needs to be a reminder that these people as we see them depicted on TV and celeb gossip mags are no more real and should be taken no more seriously than the ancient Greek gods on Olympus.

The Best Selling Show

The last few weeks has helped retore my faith in British television production.

Nicky and I have become fans of Primeval and Life On Mars.

The first is a rollicking little sci-fi, the second is an intriguing psychological drama.

Highly recommended.

I'd Just Take The Car Wash

A car wash in Brisbane run by former pimp and Fitzgerald Enquiry 'identity' Warren Armstrong 'offers a $55 car wash by a topless woman, and a $100 wash by a totally nude female attendant – which includes an X-rated show'.

The cops were worried about public decency but Armstrong is running the show in a closed shed and 'there had been no indication of wilful exposure, which is a criminal offence'.

However, Acting Premier Anna Bligh had more serious offences in mind and was relieved to learn:

The operation also was running on recycled water and therefore did not break current level five restrictions...
Presumably prompted by the reporter, Bligh added:

...the government fleet would not be using the car wash.
Pity really. It's a miserable existence in the Queensland Public Service.

Footnote: What an odd situation in present-day Queensland that two adults can arrange a commercial transaction in which she gets her gear off for his visual titillation and it's ok as long as she doesn't - ahem - spread 'em, which is the offence of 'wilful exposure', yet he can walk into a newsagency and, following a commercial transaction, obtain any number of magazines in which the aforementioned flash is taking place.

Just saying.

Sing, Sing, Sing

Shut up and sing, entreats Oasis' Noel Gallagher.

Well, perhaps somewhat less articulately than that...

"With U2 it's like play One, shut the f**k up about Africa. People don't want to hear about it all the time."
Encore!
